Durga Puja 2022: Here’s Everything about Durga Puja Celebration!

Durga Puja celebrates the triumph of good over the evil! It is basically the celebration of Hindus and on the day of Durga Puja Goddess Durga is revered for having had killed the demon buffalo Mahishasura. This festival is meant to honor the power of female shakti Maa Durga.

Durga Puja 2022 dates

Durga Puja 2022 will start on 1st of October 2022 and will end on 5th October 2022 that is Wednesday. Here’s the complete information….

8th October, Monday - Mahalaya

Mahalaya is considered as the day when Goddess Durga comes to the Earth and the eyes on her idol is designed on this day and the ritual is called as Chokkhu Daan.

14th October, Sunday - Maha Panchami

This marks the beginning of the festival celebration.

15th October 2019, Monday - Maha Sashti

On the Maha Sashti day, Maa Shakti is welcomed with a rital called as ‘Pran Prathistha’. And, in another custom called as ‘Bodhon’, the face of the idol gets unveiled.

16th October 2019, Tuesday - Maha Saptami

Before starting off with the Puja ceremony, bathing of Navapatrika takes place that is the Puja of nine plants, Ashoka, banana, turmeric, pomegranate, Jayanti, arum plant, paddy, colocasia and bel.

17th October, Wednesday - Maha Ashtami

Durga Ashtami or Ashtami s one of the significant days of the entire celebration and on this day usually people keep fast. Also, in this daySandhi Puja is also done that is considered very auspicious in the entire celebration and this is the day when Navami begins and Asthami ends.

18th October, Thursday - Maha Navami

On the day of Navami, Maa Shakti is revered as Mahisasurmardini which is believed to be the annihilator of Buffalo. This is the final day of the festival, when Puja begins with Shodashopachar and Mahasanan.

19th October, Friday 2019 - Vijaya Dashami

On the day of Vijay Dashami, Goddess Durga returns to her abode and on this day women offer vermillion on Goddess and also on each other.

The grand festival of Durga Puja is celebrated in the last five days of Dussehra or Navaratri. DURGA PUJA 2022 will be celebrated from 11th of October to 15th of October with the immersion of Durga idol.

Where is the Festival Celebrated?

The festival of Durga Puja is specifically celebrated in the state of West Bengal, and particularly in Kolkata city. This festival is the most important for Bengalis and they celebrate it with utmost zeal and enthusiasm. But, the festival is also celebrated across other parts of the country apart from West Bengal.

How is the festival celebrated?

Durga Puja is celebrated in a similar manner to the Ganesh Chaturthi festival. The start of the festival sees huge, elaborately crafted statues of Goddess Durga installed in homes and beautifully decorated podiums all over the city. At the end of the festival, the statues are paraded through the streets, accompanied by music and dancing, and then immersed in the water.

What are the important rituals celebrated in Durga Puja?

Around one week before the festival starts, on the occasion of Mahalaya, the Goddess is invited to come to the earth. The eyes are drawn on the idols of the Goddess on this day, in an auspicious ritual called Chokkhu Daan. In 2019, this will take place on October 8.

And, right after the installation of Goddess Durga, on Saptami her holy presence is invoked by a ritual called as Pran Pratisthan. In the entire ritual a banana plant, dressed in sari is bathed into a river and the plant is called Bou. This ritual will be performed in 2019 on 16th of October.

Every day prayers are offered to the Goddess and all her forms are worshipped by people. On the day of Ashtami, Kumari Puja is celebrated where virgin girls are worshipped and thereby the virgin form of Maa Durga. On this day virgin girls are considered as the manifestation of women power.

Kumari Puja 2019 – 17th October

The final Puja is performed on the day of Navami and Maha Aarti is performed marking the conclusion of the festival.

Navami Puja 2019 – 18th October

On last day of the festival the idol of Goddess Durga is immersed into the river and women on this day put vermillion on each other.
